Principles

The AMA's schools are considered to receive the Autistic, regardless of his/her level of impairment, and hence to assist that person unlimitedly, i.e., never rejecting an Autistic deficient by considering it is impossible to assist him/her. It is important to emphasize that if the AMA, an exclusively Autistic-oriented organization, refuses to assist a certain case in the city of São Paulo, another institution will hardly do it, because the Autism is characterized by certain extremely severe cases that were infinitely rejected by institutions that take care of mentally deficients.

For the AMA it is equally important and challenging the assistance of either a highly committed Austitic adult or an Autistic child without mental retardation or low IQ, that should be usually confused with the normal children.

When the school was organized, one thing was clearly defined in the institution's goals: the school is an entity that must prepare each person for the adult life, whatever this preparation means. Considering this aim, each case is evaluated separately. Depending on the abilities, the necessities and the limitations of each pupil, an education program is established. This program may not include literacy or the development of the other abilities that take place in a common school.

Work Proposal

Having many different people to assist, the association's schools are basically organized into two different parts:

Elie Hamoui School

The AMA's headquarters are located in the building at the downtown district of Cambuci.
But there is also a classroom for 10 children there.
This classroom is recent, and has been working since the 1997 academic year.
It is used for a very specific need: to assist Autistic children (until 10 or 12 years old) that are able to be educated (many of them are self literated at home, although this isolated fact doesn't mean that an Autistic may be included in a common education program). These children find in the AMA  the support they need to take classes in a common school, being this integration very careful and never forgetting to give the Autistic the special attention he/she deserves. Aiming at the whole development of the individual and bearing in mind his abilities this school gives the students many activities like musical therapy, speech therapy, pedagogic activities that  are appropriate for the pupil's development level, computer activities, social activities and physical education.

Marysia Portinari School

Located in the far south of the city of São Paulo, at the Parelheiros district, the AMA's farm was acquired thanks to one of  our greatest events of fund-raising: the 1st Art's Beneficent Auction. At the beginning the farm was the only property that the AMA had to build a school on, being assisted there the more diverse cases of Autism and it was acquired because of the adequate environment for the AMA's school's building.
Currently, due to the need for treatment differentiation, another school was built in the same construction where is located the association's headquarters.
The farm began to play a better defined role.
There are 30 individuals being assisted in the farm, 12 of them are residents having a severe Autism situation, with no possibilities of reintegration to a common school.
This center is looking for the whole development of the pontentialities of the Autistic individuals strongly encouraging their independence, by the same time minimizing the effect of their deficiencies.
In short, the center works for preparing this individual for an adult life as independent as possible, with features similar to the common people, what means a life including work, housekeeping, personal care, sports and leisure. In this way the activities realized in this school are: classroom, kitchen, workshop, laundry, physical education, housekeeping, social activities and leisure.
